NEWS FROM NEWBRIDGE

Four Newbridge students drafted to Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

MEDIA RELEASE: Four QMJHL draft picks from the same classroom

Lower Sackville, NS (Sunday, June 1, 2014) - - Newbridge Academy must be doing something right. Two of the top four Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft picks are students at this small school in Lower Sackville. Luke Green and Evan Fitzpatrick, first and fourth picks overall respectively, are grade ten students in the same small class. Incredibly, two other students, Matthew Green and Rowan O’Brien, also picked up in the Q-Draft, are in the class as well.

“We are so proud of our students. They are seeing the results of hard work and dedication,” says Trevor MacEachern, Chairman of Newbridge Academy. “But more importantly, we are so happy to see that these four young men are people of character. These are good kids. They preform just as well in the classroom as they do on the ice, and are incredible role models for our up-and-coming young players.”

MacEachern credits the school’s focus on leadership part of this, but also that the families are involved and engaged in their hockey as well as their education.

All four players have been a part of Newbridge Academy for several years, taking full advantage of the daily on-ice training the school provides with professional coaching.

“With coaches like Keifer House, Paddy Flynn, Jaro Sevcik and Brad MacCharles working with our players every day, the benefits are evident,” explains MacEachern. “Having access to these high-level coaches, working with students on individual skills and tactics, gives them a huge advantage when they hit the ice with their hockey teams.”

Luke Green, joining the ranks of Nova Scotians Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, was selected first overall by the Saint John Sea Dogs. Evan Fitzpatrick was picked fourth overall and the first goaltender, will join Sherbrooke Phoenix, while Matt Green will join his twin brother in Saint John. Rowan O’Brien, also a goaltender, was picked up by Gatineau Olympiques – Rowan’s older brother, Liam (also a former Newbridge student) was recently traded to Sherbrooke and will be able to help Fitzpatrick through his rookie season.

Two Newbridge students named to Allstate All-Canadians Camp

Two of Newbridge Academy’s top grade nine students have been selected to be part of the 2013 Allstate

bantam-aged players who will participate in the third annual Camp. Hosted by NHL players, the invitation-only camp will be held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario from August 6th to 10th, 2013. Dartmouth Major Midgets team up with Newbridge Academy

Dartmouth, NS (Tuesday, May 14, 2013) - - The Dartmouth Major Midget Hockey organization of the NSMMHL is proud to announce their new partnership with Newbridge Academy. The team’s name will change to the Newbridge Academy Gladiators Major Midget Hockey Team.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Newbridge Academy,” says Brad Crossley, President. “Newbridge Academy has become a flagship sports academy for elite athletes in Atlantic Canada, where student-athletes are able
to fully integrate their education with the time needed to dedicate to their sport. Newbridge Academy has the experience, resources and vision that we want as part of our club.”

Newbridge Academy is a non-profit, independent school, located in Lower Sackville, committed to providing opportunities for academic and athletic excellence. Newbridge Academy currently operates the Newbridge Academy Senators Major Bantam Hockey team that participates in the NSMBHL.

Needless to say, this wasn’t a rush-decision by either organization. “We have been talking for some time now about expanding our program,” explains Trevor MacEachern, Chairman of Newbridge Academy. “As we look to grow our school, we want to make sure that we align ourselves with the best programs – the Dartmouth Major Midget program is highly-respected, and stands out among the NSMMHL teams. With Brad Crossley involved and at the helm for 20 plus years, the organization is clearly a success considering the quality players they have produced and the level of respect the program has in the community.”

A key piece to the partnership is that the team will remain in Dartmouth and newly announced Head Coach, Steve Crowell, will lead the team. “Having a new Head Coach and a new major partnership are big changes for a
team,” says Crossley. “The most important message we want our players and community to hear is that we are all working toward the same goal – we all want the same thing for our players and program – success.”

Stay tuned as the Newbridge Academy Gladiators Major Midget Hockey Team releases their new logo and team identity.

Newbridge Academy announces partnership with Gatorade

Picture

Newbridge Academy is thrilled to announce their newly inked partnership with Gatorade.

Gatorade has partnered with select hockey academies across the country that have proven their success and high standards in their hockey programming, and Newbridge is proud to be one of the few academies to have been chosen.

Gatorade is focused on elevating the importance of proper athletic fueling, so it's important for them to partner with athletes and coaches who believe sports nutrition improves performance. As part of the partnership, Gatorade will provide extensive training on sports nutrition for our Hockey Program instructors. On April 10th, our program instructors will travel to Toronto where they will attend the G SERIES Hockey Symposium at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Here they will learn the ins and outs of the science behind Gatorade products through the Gatorade Sport and Science Institute.

To help athletes get the most out of their performance, scientists from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute have created the G SERIES - a new line of products supported by the latest science and developed in collaboration with the world's greatest athletes. This product line is a step up from the traditional Gatorade products and is designed to meet the needs of elite athletes at the most critical times for their performance - before (1), during (2) and after (3) a workout, practice or competition.

Newbridge Academy's program participants will be given the opportunity to try the new products along with proper nutritional instruction. Our elite athletes in our Hockey Conditioning Program will have daily access to a variety of training products supplied by Gatorade.

This partnership is a great addition to our Academy, as we continue to develop and enhance our programs.

Newbridge Academy announces all-star line-up of Elite Conditioning Coaches

Newbridge Academy is thrilled to announce the appointment of our new Elite Conditioning Coaches for the 2013 Program. Elite players, Chad Anderson, Liam O'Brien, Ryan Penny and Damon MacEachern will be leading our Elite Conditioning program.

Chad Anderson is a certified personal trainer and currently plays Professional Hockey in Europe. He played Junior Hockey with the prestigious Notre Dame Program in Saskatchewan as well as winning an NCAA Championship with Norwich University as Captain.During this time, Chad was recognized for his stellar athletics and academics by being selected to the All American team.

A first round pick of the Rimouski Oceanic in 2010, Liam O'Brien grew up playing minor hockey in Halifax. An alumnus of Newbridge Academy, Liam has strong ties to the school. Liam is currently playing for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies where he is an Assistant Captain. Liam is recognized within the QMJHL as a hard-nosed competitor and credits his commitment to off season training to his success. Liam's career highlights are scoring the winning goal for the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in the 2010 Telus Cup and attending the Pittsburgh Penguins Development Camp in 2012.

A fourth round pick of the Moncton Wildcats, Ryan Penny is a product of the Bedford Blues Minor Hockey Association. Ryan is a native of Fall River and played major midget hockey for the Dartmouth Subways. Known as a solid two way centerman, Ryan is having a breakout season with the very talented Wildcat team. Ryan is a world class skater and credits his speed and strength to a rigorous off-ice training regimen. Expect Ryan to play a leadership role next season with Moncton. He is a natural leader on the ice and in the classroom. Ryan's career highlights are wearing the "C" for the the Nova Scotia Under 15 and 16 teams, being drafted by the Moncton Wildcats and scoring a huge goal against the Halifax Mooseheads on national television.

Damon MacEachern , a 2011 first-round draft pick of the MHL and a Newbridge Academy alumnus, was named Captain of the Metro Shipbuilders Junior A Hockey team and is currently the youngest Captain in the league. He attended prep school at Rothesay-Netherwood and played with the Halifax Titans in the 2011 Telus Cup - a feat few players can attest to. Damon has spent the past six months working with Newbridge Academy's Elite Hockey Program and, as a Canfit Pro Certified Personal Trainer, will be back with the Elite Conditioning Program this summer.

As Newbridge Academy's Elite Hockey Conditioning program continues to grow, we are thrilled to have such talent joining our team. It was imperative to us to find excellent, very personable, young men that will be the best role models for our participants. These four young men have played at a very high level, know what it takes to get there, and have the training experience and qualifications to show our participants the way.

Chad, Damon, Liam and Ryan are very excited to be part of our Elite Conditioning Program and are looking forward to getting things started in June.

Former Newbridge student invited to Penguins Camp

Picture
Liam wearing #20 for Newbridge Academy.

Newbridge Academy alumnus Liam O’Brien has earned an invitation to Pittsburgh Penguins training camp in September.

O’Brien, a former QMJHL first-round pick of the Rimouski Oceanic, had 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points in 67 games in the QMJHL last season and participated in a six-day development camp with the Penguins in July.

Liam’s family is still very much involved in Newbridge Academy with two younger brothers attending Newbridge this September.

Shawn O’Brien, Liam’s father, recently had the following to say about his time at Newbridge Academy, “My son attended Newbridge Academy for one year. He left to accept a hockey scholarship for well know prep school. When we reflect on his experience at Newbridge we realize that the experience provided him with an environment for a well-rounded learning experience. He thrived academically as he has recently graduated from grade 12 with an 88% average but he also developed important leadership qualities and a discipline to lead an active life. We are thankful for the experience and encourage families to take a serious look at this opportunity.”

Newbridge Academy gets approval to offer High School credits

Lower Sackville, NS (Thursday, July 19, 2012) - - Newbridge Academy has been officially approved to
issue Nova Scotia Department of Education high school credits. The non-profit, independent school in Lower Sackville received word on Wednesday that it had been granted the honourable distinction.

“Having Nova Scotia’s Department of Education’s official approval to issue high school credits is a big deal for a small, relatively new independent school and it’s something we are very proud of,” explains Jason Wolfe, Headmaster for Newbridge Academy. “By approving our submission, the Department of Education has given us their vote of confidence in delivering high school curriculum. This has been a long process and a lot of work has gone into making this possible. I would like to thank the Department of Education for supporting our efforts.”

The process began last fall as Newbridge Academy staff worked diligently to put together a program that
would benefit their students. Many of the those students who completed grade nine in June, have been a part of Newbridge since it opened five years ago. Ensuring a complementary high school program was a sought after goal of the school.

“Our students are used to small class-sizes, top-of-the-line Apple technology, online curriculum, invested teachers and administrators, and daily physical activity, so we wanted our high school students to continue benefitting from this type of program delivery,” said Wolfe. “As a private school, we have the luxury of being able to adapt our
programs to suit our students’ needs while maintaining and exceeding curriculum outcomes, and high school will be no different.”

With childhood obesity on the rise, Newbridge Academy recognizes the need for a more integrated approach to combining academics and healthy living. Along with an advanced active living component, Newbridge has developed a strong, respected academic program. The school will now offer a full-range of education – Junior Primary to Grade 12.

Newbridge Academy is a non-profit, independent school located in Lower Sackville. Students at Newbridge Academy participate in an active and constructive approach to learning. Each day is filled with professionally instructed sport activities; curriculum delivery focused around student learning styles designed by skilled, Nova Scotia Licensed teachers and ground-breaking use of technology and leadership training. Students benefit from small class sizes, hands-on learning, and emphasis placed on creativity, activity and critical thinking. Newbridge to host Bernie Bishop Memorial Hockey Game

Wednesday, April 4, 2012 - - Newbridge Academy is pleased to announce that we will be honouring our friend, Bernie Bishop, in a Memorial Hockey Game in his name. The inaugural Bernie Bishop Memorial Hockey Game will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Sackville Arena at 7:00 p.m. The game will feature local High School hockey all-stars from Millwood, Sackville and Lockview High, versus Newbridge Academy Alumni.

Because of Bernie's lasting contributions to hockey in the Sackville-area, we hope to attract a lot of community attention and have a large, successful event to remember and celebrate what he did for our community. Proceeds from the event will go support Newbridge Academy and the scholarship created in Bernie's memory.

Planning is well underway to making this a big event - we hope you will join us to remember Bernie and enjoy a good game of hockey in his memory!
